Country’s first recycled plastic bottle Christmas tree unveiled

Crowne Plaza Dhaka Gulshan unveiled Bangladesh's first Christmas tree made entirely from recycled plastic bottles on Monday, marking a sustainable shift in festive celebrations.

Hotel's senior leadership collected every bottle used in the installation over several months, demonstrating that environmental change begins with personal choices. Installation stands in the hotel lobby as part of IHG Hotels & Resorts' global sustainability initiative, Journey to Tomorrow.

Karthi VK, General Manager of Crowne Plaza Dhaka Gulshan, inaugurated the display.

"This tree is more than a decoration; it is a statement. By giving new life to discarded plastic, we aim to inspire our guests and community to rethink their choices," he said.

Leadership team conceptualized and assembled the structure entirely themselves, embodying the theme "RRR – Reduce. Reuse. Revive." Initiative began in July when management pledged to eliminate single-use plastics from their workspaces, homes and public engagements.

"In July, we challenged ourselves to stop using single-use plastics, not just at work but everywhere. Today, this installation reflects the difference those choices made," Karthi said, emphasizing that meaningful change grows from consistent small steps.

Project transforms non-degradable bottles into a festive symbol, underscoring the hotel's leadership-driven approach to reducing plastic waste and nurturing environmental responsibility. Installation reinforces that sustainability is a year-round duty to people, planet and community, not limited to specific seasons.

Crowne Plaza Dhaka Gulshan has invited guests, partners and Dhaka residents to visit the lobby installation and join the conversation on greener, more imaginative festive practices.
