Saab and Embraer, partnering with Brazilian Air
Force, have completed certification tests for in-flight refueling between F-39
Gripen E fighter jets and KC-390 Millennium transport aircraft, marking a
significant milestone for both manufacturers.
Operation SamaÃēma test campaign took place at
Embraer's GaviÃŖo Peixoto facility, home to Gripen Flight Test Centre. Around 40
engineers and test pilots from Saab, Embraer and Brazilian Air Force
participated in trials coordinated by Department of Aerospace Science and
Technology.
Teams evaluated various speeds, altitudes and flight configurations. Both aircraft use fly-by-wire controls, which manufacturers say helped maintain stable handling during fuel transfer. KC-390 produced favorable wake conditions whilst Gripen E remained responsive in close formation.
Tests had dual objectives. First was certifying
Gripen E as receiver, confirming its stability when taking fuel from KC-390's
hose-and-drogue system. Second verified compatibility across KC-390's full
refueling envelope, including high-speed transfers during day and night
operations.
Walter Pinto JÃēnior, Embraer Defense &
Security COO, said milestone confirms KC-390's tanker capabilities,
highlighting its conversion from transport to tanker within few hours. Saab's
Head of Flight Testing Mikael Olsson stated trials demonstrate Gripen E has
reached "a new level of operational reach".
Swedish Military Aviation Authority will now
review refueling data for Gripen E certification. Brazil's Industrial Promotion
and Coordination Institute will conduct airworthiness work for Brazilian Air
Force.
Capability strengthens Embraer-Saab partnership.
Brazil is assembling Gripen E/F locally, whilst Sweden plans acquiring KC-390
for airlift fleet renewal. Certification gives both manufacturers stronger
joint export proposition.
