Election Commission's new
app will let expatriates, election officials, and detainees register to vote by
post.
Election Commission (EC)
will officially launch its âPostal Vote BDâ application on November 18,
enabling expatriate Bangladeshis to register for postal ballots in the upcoming
parliamentary election.
EC Secretary Akhtar Ahmed
confirmed the new date to reporters on Sunday in Dhaka.
Originally planned for
November 16, the launch was moved for practical reasons. Secretary Akhtar Ahmed
explained that November 16 is a Sunday, a weekly holiday in many nations, and
the voter list will be finalised on the 18th. The new date aligns with these
key events.
This initiative allows
expatriate citizens, election duty officials, and individuals in legal custody
to vote by post. Officials confirmed that expatriates can begin their
registration process immediately after the app goes live.
Separately, the EC is
finalising the code of conduct for political parties and candidates. A schedule
for dialogues with the parties will be announced once this is complete.
Announcement came as Md Tarique
Rahman, Secretary of the Amjanota Party, continued a hunger strike outside the
EC building.
He is protesting party's
delayed registration. In response to questions, EC Secretary said that the EC
has sent all required legal instructions to the party via official letters.
He urged an end to the hunger
strike, saying the party should now file a legal appeal to resolve the matter.
